Shortages of food created riots in the villages so King Edward II sent out his knights to all the corners of his lands to help restore peace and order.

Sir Geoffrey was sent to the Market of Newbury but was unable to reach the Market as a result of the River Enbourne breaking its banks and washing away the old timber bridge.

He set about building a bridge in order to reach the villagers. This bridge will forever be known as ‘Knightbridge’.

Order was restored and so that it remained this way the King decreed that Sir Geoffrey be given lands between Headley and Newbury.
